In 1962, Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight founded Blue Ribbon Sports, the forerunner of Nike. Some time before that, Bowerman had a stroke of genius while his wife was baking waffles. He figured out that you could apply the texture of waffles to the soles of athletic shoes.
